The path to adulthood is a paved road of smudged eyeliner and hilarious stories. Here are some of the things we wish a smart, sassier older sister had typed up for us before we fumbled our way thru our twenties.
Build a network, off-line.
Snapchat and Twitter are fun and great, but you need real-life conversations to compliment those @ messages. We know that it’s pretty easy to get sucked into social network addiction, so set a goal to meet someone once a week for drinks. On-line is fun and great, but nothing is more important than old-fashioned face-to-face conversation.
Have a hobby that isn’t Pinterest.
Hey, we love Pinterest too and we have proof. But the thing about Pinterest is that you can quickly lose 5-6 hours scrolling through pins. You need to have a hobby that involves off-line activity; something to engage and challenge you. Why is it important? Hobbies often lead to new friendships and job-marketable skills that aren’t taught in a classroom.
Read words that aren’t on a screen.
Books are sexy, and we aren’t just talking 50 Shades of Grey. Why bother? Reading print books has been linked to improved sleeping habits, helping to lower depression, and increased mental stamina. Steal 30-45 minutes a day to read something that’s not on your phone, you’ll thank us.
Write great e-mails.
Seems like weird advice, huh? Email is a learned skill, not just an app. In our e-mail flooded world, you need to write emails that stand out and demand to be opened. When you’re applying for a job, odds are your email message will be the determining factor that leads an HR rep to open and read your resume. Don’t take email lightly.
Don’t be afraid to be afraid.
That’s not an oxymoron. If you truly want to live an adventurous life, you’ll need to challenge your skills and push your comfort zones frequently. Being afraid isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign that you’re doing something worthwhile. Start small to build your fear tolerance – think about committing to one activity a month that pushes you outside of your comfort zones to try something new.
You’ve got a lot of people telling you how to live your life when you’re navigating through your twenties. You’ll make lots of mistakes and you’ll find lots of things about yourself that are surprising. We think that these 5 simple lessons will help you become a more complete version of yourself, however you define that.
What advice would you add to this list? Share your lessons in our comments below!

Time to say goodbye to 2013 and hello to 2014! But before we put on our party hats for 2014, let’s reflect on the moments of this past year that made us laugh or even shake our heads in disbelief. When these “love them” or “hate them” moments happened in 2013, you can bet we were right there offering shirts for you to customize because there is nothing like being the first to wear a new popular trend! To recap 2013, we’ve collected the five biggest moments that were popular enough to cause us (and you!) to base customized apparel and accessories off of.
Leave it to Miley to provide us with one of the most shocking moments of 2013. Her VMA performance made everyone well aware of what the term twerking meant, and it also made for some creative custom shirts!
Unless it’s Super Bowl time, there is usually no excitement around commercials. But when the hump day camel arrived, everyone in the world couldn’t help but repeat the popular phrase, “Guess what day it is? Hump day!”
Every year it seems like there is an animal that is dragged out of obscurity and thrown into the spotlight. This year that animal was the sloth. Everyone couldn’t help but share photos and create funny sayings for sloths and they were popping up everywhere in the media. Just ask Kristin Bell how cool sloths are as she happily admitted how much she loves them!
What Does The Fox Say?
“Wa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pow!” Bet you didn’t know that’s what a fox says. The band Ylvis brought us the funny song and video, “What does the fox say,” in 2013 that let us to believe it could be as big as the “Gangnam Style” trend!
When The Great Gatsby movie came out, it had everyone wanting to live the 1920’s lifestyle and party with Gatsby himself. Because of this, it was only natural for us to put some Gatsby designs on shot glasses and stylish apparel. After all, if we can’t party with the real Gatsby, we might as well have the next best thing!
These are just a few of the moments we have featured on our custom apparel from 2013. What trend or moment did we miss from this past year that you would have liked to see on a custom shirt or accessory?

It’s always better to give than it is to receive around Christmas time! Fueled by this Christmas spirit, we decided to adopt a local family here in Columbus, Ohio for Christmas. The holiday season is the perfect time to make a donation or volunteer in your local community, and if you have ever considered adopting a family for Christmas, the process is super simple and enjoyable!
First, you need to find a local service agency in your area. We chose to go through a local church to find a family we could adopt this year. The organization you choose to go through will help you find the right size of family that will fit within your budget. This is the exciting part because you’ll be able to find out the names of the kids you’ll be buying gifts for and you’ll also receive their wish lists. This year we have three awesome kids we will be buying gifts for and they are James, Johanna and Linda.
Once you have your family and their wish lists, all you need to do is go shopping and bring the gifts back to your local agency. It’s that simple! For our family, we chose to make it a company wide event. We wrapped a donation box and placed it in the break room so everyone from the Customized Girl team could have a chance to make a money donation to help us buy gifts. The response in donations was amazing and we can’t wait to go shopping for our family!
A big thank you to all of you who are making a statement by adopting a family for Christmas or volunteering in some other way to make Christmas special for others this year!

Before we send out any order, the printed item and its print quality go through a detailed inspection to ensure our customer is receiving the very best product possible. If we spot any imperfection in the item or the printing, we put the flawed product aside and start over. At Customized Girl, we are very attentive to what is going on in the world and are very well aware that there are others in need. That is why instead of throwing out these imperfect products, we donate all of them directly to Planet Aid.
Making this weekly donation to Planet Aid is not only good for the environment, but it is a way to help those who are less fortunate. Planet Aid is a nonprofit organization known for empowering disadvantaged people from around the world. They use the funds generated from selling unwanted clothing to support international aid projects in Africa, Asia and the Americas. Planet Aid supports development projects that help individuals and communities improve the condition of their lives. These programs focus on spurring action in the areas of micro-financing, sustainable agriculture, health and disease prevention, education and community development.
One of the micro-financing projects Planet Aid supports that really attracted our attention was the mission of empowering women by delivering increased awareness of household finance in rural India. Women who are involved in this project have seen great change in their family’s livelihood, allowing them to gain better access to food and education. Through this project, women have also gained decision-making power within their family, and thus are able to more effectively contribute to raising their children. Plus, over 1,500 women who have participated in these micro-financing projects have even been able to acquire health insurance for their families, a huge accomplishment for many in rural India!
This is just one story of the many projects Planet Aid is able to fund with recycled textiles. If you would like to know more about Planet Aid and their projects, check out their website at http://www.planetaid.org/.

Strong women aren’t just locked up in the confines of history. Here are 7 women who are making powerful statements for what they believe in! We might not all agree with their goals but we can all follow suit and stand up for what we believe in!
“To actually feel like you’ve done something good with your life and you’re useful to others is what I was always wanting, and was always looking for.” –Angeline Jolie
Over the last few years, Angelina Jolie has used her fame to bring attention to the plight over women all over the world living in poverty and suffering gender-based violence, especially during times of war. She even directed a movie, In the Land of Milk and Honey, to help bring this issue to the forefront! While we might not have the same platform, we can all make efforts to do something good for others, whether it is volunteering at a soup kitchen, reaching out to a lonely classmate, or making sure you recycle at home.
“…if you are overdressed, it is a comment on them. If you are under dressed, it is a comment on you.” –Condoleezza Rice
Serving as the Head of the State Department under President Bush, Condoleezza Rice helped steer the country after 9/11 and the following turbulent times. She knew that how you present yourself is so important, both to you and the message you are advocating for. Condoleezza knows that how you present yourself has a big impact on how others perceive you, right or wrong, and she used that to her advantage. And, she once said her dream job was to run the NFL – how cool is that?
“I’ve never seen myself as a ‘girl driver.’ I’m just a driver.” –Danica Patrick
Danica Patrick is making a big splash in the world of professional racing as she is often the only woman competing and she’s one fierce competitor. Currently, she’s having one of her best seasons yet. We love that she isn’t letting something that is a stereotypically male job stop her from pursuing her dreams. Danica is quietly challenging peoples ideas about women in racing and winning in the process!
“Human rights are women’s rights, and women’s rights are human rights. Let us not forget that among those rights are the right to speak freely — and the right to be heard.” –Hilary Clinton
Hilary Clinton has been able to fight and raise awareness for women’s issues in her numerous roles in public life. By continuing to ensure that these issues are at the forefront of policymaking, she’s making a bold statement about what’s important. Because Hilary refuses to let women’s rights get swept under the rug, we all benefit by the debate she encourages.
“I care much more about saving the lives of mothers and babies than I do about a fancy museum somewhere.” –Melinda Gates
Along with her husband, Bill Gates, Melinda has helped give away more money to charitable causes than anyone else in the world. She’s making huge headway by funding projects that work to end maternal and infant mortality, stop malaria and educate women and girls around the world. We can all impact the world around us by fighting like Melinda does for the things we are passionate about!
“Don’t waste your energy trying to change opinions … Do your thing, and don’t care if they like it” –Tina Fey
Through her work on Saturday Night Live and other comedic endeavors, Tina Fey has endeared herself to millions of Americans. While some might not think girls can be funny, Tina ignores the haters and does her own thing – which is to our benefit! We all need a reminder sometimes to follow our heart and not get caught up in what everyone else is doing.
“Sometimes painful things can teach us lessons we didn’t think we needed to know.” –Amy Poehler
Another one of our first ladies of comedy, Amy Poehler, has also made a name for herself in a traditionally male-dominated field. Moreover, she’s proven that you don’t have to lose touch with your sensitive side to be successful or competitive. What a great reminder that there is something for us to learn in every experience, even the painful ones!
There are women all around us making bold statements about what they believe in, whether it’s politics, the arts, philanthropy or so much more! We’ve highlighted just a few of them here; please share your favorite modern women making powerful statements in the comments! We’d love to hear about them!

It turns out, moms really do know everything.
All of us have been on the listening end of a mom lecture, whether that lecture was delivered from our own mom, or from a “mom-ly” teacher or friend. While we tend to quickly role our eyes in the moment, what mom says really does hold weight in the real world. Here are 6 of our most favorite annoying things that moms say (that really do matter):
Mom: She who does not speak will not be heard.
Advice that holds true regardless of the audience; whether in front of your boyfriend or in front of a board meeting. Listen up girls; we shouldn’t be afraid to make a statement, or contribute our ideas to the conversation. Do your research, know your talking points, and give yourself enough credit to speak up.
Mom: Make the decision before you’re in the situation
Having a plan is important, no matter what you’ve got going on. It could be having a budget for going back to school shopping or how you’ll react during debate team. She’s right when she tells you to plan ahead, thinking through something helps you react as it happens.
Mom: No matter where you go and no matter what you do, there will always be someone better than you.
Humility is endearing. Just look at what happens when you go all Miley Cyrus on things; it’s not that attractive. It’s worth noting that humility requires confidence, not robs you of it. Brag less, believe in yourself, and steal every opportunity to learn from the people around you.
Mom: If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything.
True on the playground, and true in the lecture hall. There’s no value in saying something hurtful to gain some kind of advantage over people. That’s a move owned by bullies, and you’re better than that. Try complimenting before you cast aside, and you might just be surprised by the results.
Mom: There are plenty of fish in the sea.
True dat. That chump that broke your heart? He’s not worth the time or the energy. Let him know how you feel, and move on. It might not be easy, and it might feel like your chest in caving in at first; but there really are better options out there. Never settle for someone who readily takes advantage of your emotions.
Mom: A smile is a tremendously powerful thing. Use it recklessly.
A smile alleviates tension, casts aside anxiety, and it never goes out of style. Uniquely yours, your smile is your strongest accessory in this world. Use it to break the ice, convey confidence, or to help people feel more comfortable. Smile when you’re feeling down and in the dumps, and when you’re stressed and over-anxious. You might just find that fun things happen when you smile without regard for the consequences.
Mom: Always wear clean underwear. You never know when you’ll be in an accident.
Moms really do know what they are talking about. Thanks, mom and mom-like friends, for always having our back and knowing just what to say. What advice did your mom give you that turned out to be wise advice? Share your favorites with us in the comments below!
