It has been observed since May 23, 1984, when President Ronald Reagan acknowledged the importanance of spouse commitment to the readiness and well-being of military members. The U.S. Secretary of Defense standardized the date by officially declaring the Friday before\u00a0<a title=\"Mother's Day\" href=\"http:\/\/www.customizedgirl.com\/designs\/category\/Mothers+Day\/showsub?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=armedforces\">Mother\u2019s Day<\/a> as Military Spouse Day.<\/p>\n<p>Armed Forces Week begins the second Saturday in May and ends on the third Sunday. In 2012 it will run May 12\u201320. This week is a time to recognize those serving in the the <a title=\"Army\" href=\"http:\/\/www.customizedgirl.com\/designs\/category\/Military\/Army\/showsub?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=armedforces\">Army<\/a>, <a title=\"Navy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.customizedgirl.com\/designs\/category\/Military\/Navy\/showsub?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=armedforces\">Navy<\/a>, <a title=\"Air Force\" href=\"http:\/\/www.customizedgirl.com\/designs\/category\/Military\/Air+Force\/showsub?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=armedforces\">Air Force<\/a>, <a title=\"Marine Corps\" href=\"http:\/\/www.customizedgirl.com\/designs\/category\/Military\/Marines\/showsub?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=armedforces\">Marine Corps<\/a> and <a title=\"Coast Guard\" href=\"http:\/\/www.customizedgirl.com\/designs\/category\/Military\/Coast+Guard\/showsub?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=armedforces\">Coast Guard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Armed Forces Day is celebrated the third Saturday in May, this year being May 19th. The day was created in 1949 by then Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson as a way to honor those serving in the U.S. <a title=\"military\" href=\"http:\/\/www.customizedgirl.com\/designs\/category\/Military\/showsub?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=armedforces\">military<\/a>. It was intended to represent the unification of the <a title=\"armed forces\" href=\"http:\/\/www.customizedgirl.com\/designs\/category\/Military\/showsub?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=armedforces\">armed forces<\/a> under one department \u2013 the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n<p>To all of the military spouses: \u00a0Thank you. The strength you have while your husbands or wives are on a tour of duty is undeniable. Thank you for giving up the most important person in your life so he or she can fight for our country.<\/p>\n<p>To the men and women in our armed forces: \u00a0Thank you is not enough for what you do. Your bravery and commitment to the U.S. military is a true testament to your character.
