Last week, we announced our community partnership with The Stefanie Spielman Fund to raise money for breast cancer research<\/a>. With 10% of the proceeds from orders using promo CGCURE going to breast cancer research, we wanted to share with you the background story behind The Stefanie Spielman Fund so you would know more about the organization and cause you are helping out with your purchases.<\/p>\n

Like us, Stefanie Spielman and her husband Chris are from Ohio! They were high school sweethearts and were married after graduating from Ohio State. Stefanie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998 after she found a lemon-sized lump during a breast self-exam.<\/p>\n

Stefanie was only 30 years old when she got the news from her doctor that she did indeed, have breast cancer. Family was and is the number one priority for the Spielmans so when Chris got the news, he decided to take a year off from football to stay home and care for his family. This brought the family a lot of national attention since Chris was a professional football player at the time. With the media attention and overwhelming support of well wishes they were receiving, Chris and Stefanie instantly knew there was more they could do to educate people about breast cancer and the importance of prevention.<\/p>\n

The Spielmans began teaming up with local businesses to raise money for OSUCC-James Hospital, where Stefanie was receiving treatment. They had a goal of raising $250,000 within the first six months; however, they soon exceeded that amount and were able to raise more than $1,000,000 for The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. This ongoing support from the local community has led to more than $10 million raised to support breast cancer patients and research at OSUCCC-James Hospital.<\/p>\n

Sadly, in November 2009, Stefanie lost her battle with cancer. However, she had a final message to the world, “continue to fight!”<\/p>\n
