One night, an elderly man asked Héctor Lavoe if the band could play a danza. Puzzled, Lavoe whispered to his bandmate, Willie Colón: “What’s wrong with this jibaro guy?” without realizing that he was being overheard. The "jibaro," incensed, left Lavoe with the black eye seen here. Years later, Lavoe brashly dedicated his song "Soñando Despierto," a danza, with the words "Para ti, mother flower."
