Our Favorite Movies to Watch For Halloween!

We wanted to do something fun to celebrate October this year, the spookiest month of all! So we asked the people on our marketing team what their favorite movies to watch for Halloween are. Get to know us and get some great movie recommendations below!

Andy:
As the Marketing Team’s resident horror buff, I watch scary movies all year long and have a huge place in my heart for all the classics, Freddy Kruger being my all-time favorite horror villain. Having said that, I still think my favorite movie to watch during Halloween has to be Ernest Scared Stupid. It’s just the perfect mix of campy Halloween fun, simple but effective storytelling, and some of the best practical effects of all time. Even after all these years, it continues to hold up as a great Halloween film for folks of all ages.

Ernest accidentally unleashes an ugly troll that plots to transform children into wooden dolls in the town of Briarville, Missouri.

Kathleen:
Well, for someone who hates scary movies, Halloween isn’t really my favorite movie holiday. I still have nightmares from watching Poltergeist, Freddy, Halloween, and Friday the 13th as a kid. The worst. So if I had to pick one, I’d say my favorite movies are the Harry Potter series. Not technically Halloween, but it still fits the season and I’m always in the mood to re-watch them when October rolls around.

An orphaned boy enrolls in a school of wizardry, where he learns the truth about himself, his family and the terrible evil that haunts the magical world.

Hannah:
I never was a fan of horror or scary movies growing up. Still today it isn’t something I gravitate towards regularly. When I was a kid, the first scary movie I watched was Friday the 13th. I remember not being able to sleep for a few days after even though it really isn’t that scary. I am only now starting to watch more of the horror section on Netflix since it is spooky season, but I still don’t watch scary movies alone. I am almost done with Haunting of Hill House, and it’s really good! Of course, American Horror Story is incredible too… but the intro is always more frightening than the actual show haha. My favorite Halloween “movie” though, is The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion.

Madeline:
Growing up, it was one of Mom & I’s favorite Fall traditions to watch Hocus Pocus together. We’d carve our Jack O’Lanterns––fresh from the pumpkin patch––and afterward, we’d cozy up on the couch in pajamas for the event. I had a huge crush on Thackery Binx (and still do, if we’re being honest). More recently, though, I’ve been enjoying indie horror films like The Invitation, or the all-too-disturbing psychological thrillers like The Lodge and Mother.

A curious youngster moves to Salem, where he struggles to fit in before awakening a trio of diabolical witches that were executed in the 17th century.

Hazel:
Has anyone ever heard of The Halloween Tree? It’s an animated Hanna-Barbera made-for-television movie that aired on Cartoon Network every Halloween season in the 90’s. It tells the story of four friends who skip trick-or-treating in favor of chasing after their fifth friend’s spirit in an attempt to save them. The film explores the way different cultures celebrate their own version of Halloween and in retrospect, is really educational. Which would have completely turned me off as a kid, but it’s done in a really fun way.

Fun fact: I recently learned that this movie is based off Ray Bradbury’s 1972 novel by the same name, is narrated by Ray Bradbury, and also features Leonard Nimoy in the voice cast!

Four children learn the origins of Halloween customs while trying to save the life of their friend.

So there’s the list of our favorite movies to watch for Halloween! Have you seen any of the films we mentioned? What are some of your favorite films to watch during the month of October to get you in the Halloween spirit? Leave your movie recommendations in the comments! Happy Halloween!

Storefront Spotlight – Dead Cute

It’s officially the first day of the spooky month! To celebrate all things spooky, we’re featuring an extra special storefront on Customized Girl. This time we’re highlighting an incredibly unique type of storefront whos owner works in a morgue! While most of us may be too scared to even go near one of those places, Taylor S. has turned her profession into her creative passion!

The death care profession is one that largely goes undiscussed in everyday life due to its inherent associations to death. But we wanted to go straight to the source, so we asked Taylor about her storefront and experience as a mortician. Check out what she had to say about her storefront Dead Cute!

Essential workers never stop!

CG: What made you start a storefront with Customized Girl?
Taylor: I started my storefront because I have ordered from Customized Girl for years and am always impressed with the quality of their products. The customer service is also AMAZING and I always have my questions answered ASAP.

Who knew there were so many stages of decomposition?

CG: We heard that you use the earnings from your storefront for a good cause. Can you tell us more about that?
Taylor:

I started making designs and my friends and colleges wanted to purchase my designs. I had no idea I could open my own storefront and how easy it was. My dad was recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and unfortunately still had to work through his entire cancer treatment. It was extremely difficult on him so I decided to open the storefront to assist in his chemo medications and overall bills. I work at a funeral home and my
Dad has been my biggest supporter and rock as this industry is emotionally and physically draining. During COVID 19, people often forget death care workers are essential and I have been blown away by the love and support I have received from other death care workers.

New board who dis?

CG: What’s it like working in a morgue?
Taylor: Working in a mortuary has been a very rewarding career and I can’t imagine working anywhere else. I always see shirts about other essential workers and I thought “hey, I should design things for the death care industry to show they are not forgotten about.”

Show pride in your profession, no matter what you do!

CG: What is your favorite part of Halloween?
Taylor: Every day is Halloween working in a mortuary and we always look forward to Halloween baking, crafts, and decorating. We usually have all the decorations we need at work so decorating is pretty cheap! Haha

The human skull is what keeps our vital nervous system (the brain) safe!

CG: What tips can you give to aspiring storefront owners to make their stores a success?
Taylor: One tip I will always suggest to new storefront creators is to find your niche and contact everyone you can who would be interested. Whether It’s fitness, food, or career, look at other stores and see what hasn’t been done.

Our totes make great gifts! Bodybags, not so much.

CG: Any final thoughts you’d like to share with our readers?
Taylor: Check out my Instagram, DeadCuteDesigns, and don’t forget to use your hashtags! Good luck with your Customized Girl Journey. Stick with it, don’t get discouraged and you will do great!
