5 Ways To Commemorate Juneteenth

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks an important day as it honors the end of slavery in the United States. Also known as “Freedom Day,” it is celebrated every year in America. But what does that celebration look like? Here are 5 ways you can commemorate this important day in American history.

  1. Educate Yourself and Your Community. Before jumping straight in to the celebration, it is important to know what exactly you are celebrating and why. For starters, try following organizations and creators in the Black community on social media who are advocates and devote their lives to fighting racial injustice. Here are a few we recommend: Austin Channing Brown, Michelle Saahene, Emmanuel Acho, and Brittany Packnett Cunningham.
  2. Support Black-Owned Businesses. Do some research in your area for Black-owned businesses. It can be as simple as dining at a black-owned restaurant, shopping at a local black-owned boutique, or subscribing to a blog of your favorite black writer. No matter the business, the smallest gesture can make the biggest impact. Show your support!
  3. Donate To Organizations. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of incredible organizations across the country aimed to help raise awareness, educate, and make a difference for the Black community. Find one that means something to you and donate to help empower and fight for racial justice. No amount is too small. No idea where to start? Here are a few: Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Anti Racism Fund, NAACP, and Color Of Change.
  4. Listen To Black Music Artists. Did you know June is Black Music Appreciation Month? It’s a celebration of African-American music in the United States. Turn to your favorite streaming platform and jam out to Black artists during your Juneteenth celebration! From Nina Simone who recorded songs that became civil rights anthems to Leon Bridges and Kendrick Lamar of today’s day and age, there are so many incredible Black artists throughout history.
  5. Spread Awareness. As important as this day is, there are still some people who do not know much about Juneteenth. By talking with your friends and family, sharing resources on social media or participating in Juneteenth events, spreading awareness about this holiday can help in more ways than you can imagine.

However you choose to celebrate and commemorate Juneteenth, we hope you make it one to remember.
