Volunteering In Our Community – Giving Back With NNEMAP

As a small business, we understand the importance of connecting with others and making an impact, especially in the local community. With businesses and events starting to open up, we decided to return to our local food pantry, a cherished partner of ours, to help give back.

Recently, our employees spent their time volunteering with NNEMAP Food Pantry. They helped organize and pack nutritious food and other resources to give away for families in need. These items were donated by local churches, civic groups, corporate and foundation sponsors, and more.

Our volunteers shared their experiences:

Alyssa – “My time spent with NNEMAP Food Pantry was incredible. I was truly amazed at how organized and prepared they were. Every volunteer I worked with that morning was so friendly and helpful. I loved spending my Friday morning feeling like I’m making a difference and having fun while doing it! It was such a rewarding experience and I will definitely be returning soon.”

Cindy – “After I left NNEMAP, I felt energized and wanting to do more. I enjoyed talking to the other volunteers, learning about the pantry, and the community. I’m excited for our next visit.”

Pictured below is a photo of the volunteers wearing shirts from our “Buy A Shirt, Buy A Meal” storefront. This storefront was created to help provide additional meals to families in need in the Columbus, Ohio area. All of the profit that comes from these sales will go directly to the NNEMAP Food Pantry to help keep their shelves stocked. This is such a fun way to give back and we encourage you to design your own tee from this storefront and help out the local community!

Giving back is such a fulfilling feeling and a great way to get to know your community. Whether you also decide to help out at a local food pantry in your area, or another organization that offers assistance to those less fortunate, we encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and give your time to those in need.

A big THANK YOU to NNEMAP Food Pantry for having us!

Custom Fit – Different Styles And Which Fit is Best For You

At Customized Girl we know that style is everything. That’s why we offer such a huge selection of fits and styles to make sure your custom apparel goes with whichever outfit you’re pulling off that day.

In this blog post, we wanted to discuss the different types of fitting styles we offer and how they’ll look when you wear them. Read below to see which fit is best for you.

1. Relaxed Fit

Relaxed Fit shirts are your common looking everyday type of shirt. The fabric is cut with a more generous fit. They do not cling tightly to the body or adhere closely to your body’s shape. There may be some fabric that hangs off the body a little more, giving the fabric room to breathe. A misses style will tend to have shorter sleeves and a more feminine cut than a unisex style.

2. Slim-Fit

Previously called “Junior Fit”, slim-fit shirts are cut to fit closer to the body, adhering more to the body’s shape. They can sometimes run smaller than relaxed styles. It may be a good idea to buy a size larger than you normally would when buying a slim-fit tee.

3. Flowy Fit

As the name implies, these shirts offer a flowy, loose fit that will hang plenty of excess fabric. This trendy style is popular for a laid-back casual look and moves easily with your body.

Decoration Methods – How do we do it?

Have you ever wondered how we produce all of the orders that come through our site? In this post, we want to share the various types of decoration methods we offer and how they benefit you! Read below to find out more.

1. Printing: Printing ink with a direct-to-garment digital printer

This is the method we use for almost all of our apparel. It involves state-of-the-art digital printers printing high-quality ink directly onto your item. This process offers several advantages over screen printers, including:

  • A full range of colors at no extra cost. Screen printers print only one color at a time, so each additional color is an extra cost for you.
  • No minimums and no setup fees. Our printing process is the same whether we are printing 1 item or 1,000. Screen printers, however, have a lot of up-front costs in setting up the screens, so they charge for it and require minimums.
Beautiful and custom direct-to-garment printing!

2. Film or Foil: Using an ultra-thin, precision-cut, heat-pressed “film” material

This is a great method to create a durable design on unique items. For example, it’s not possible to create custom, no-minimum designs using ink on items like duffel bags and mesh jerseys. We use film instead, and it works nicely.

Items decorated in film offer a wide range of specialty options including metallic, glitter, neon, and glow-in-the-dark.

Because we cut this material before heat pressing, we must avoid complex shapes. Items using this method cannot be distressed or use distressed fonts. Also, certain pieces of art from our library are too intricate for film. (These pieces of art are not selectable when designing a film-only item.)

Three or four layers of film overlapping each other can create quite an undesirable look and feel on your item. To avoid this, we limit the design center to one text style and one piece of art for film-only items.

Uploaded images are not available for film items.

Film is perfect for custom dance bags!

3. Sublimation: Applying ink using sublimation

We use sublimation on our hard-good accessories such as custom mugs and shot glasses as well as some garments. It involves printing ink onto a very special transfer material and then applying that print to the item in a fancy heat press.

Sublimation results in very vibrant colors. You will usually notice that pinks and reds are brighter on mugs than other items.

White is not available with this process. If the item is white (like most of them are) that will be transparent and show up as the item’s color. However, if the item is metallic pink, the white will be transparent and show up the metallic pink of the item.

Beautiful vibrant prints on mugs with sublimation!

Our Favorite Movies to Watch For Halloween!

We wanted to do something fun to celebrate October this year, the spookiest month of all! So we asked the people on our marketing team what their favorite movies to watch for Halloween are. Get to know us and get some great movie recommendations below!

Andy:
As the Marketing Team’s resident horror buff, I watch scary movies all year long and have a huge place in my heart for all the classics, Freddy Kruger being my all-time favorite horror villain. Having said that, I still think my favorite movie to watch during Halloween has to be Ernest Scared Stupid. It’s just the perfect mix of campy Halloween fun, simple but effective storytelling, and some of the best practical effects of all time. Even after all these years, it continues to hold up as a great Halloween film for folks of all ages.

Ernest accidentally unleashes an ugly troll that plots to transform children into wooden dolls in the town of Briarville, Missouri.

Kathleen:
Well, for someone who hates scary movies, Halloween isn’t really my favorite movie holiday. I still have nightmares from watching Poltergeist, Freddy, Halloween, and Friday the 13th as a kid. The worst. So if I had to pick one, I’d say my favorite movies are the Harry Potter series. Not technically Halloween, but it still fits the season and I’m always in the mood to re-watch them when October rolls around.

An orphaned boy enrolls in a school of wizardry, where he learns the truth about himself, his family and the terrible evil that haunts the magical world.

Hannah:
I never was a fan of horror or scary movies growing up. Still today it isn’t something I gravitate towards regularly. When I was a kid, the first scary movie I watched was Friday the 13th. I remember not being able to sleep for a few days after even though it really isn’t that scary. I am only now starting to watch more of the horror section on Netflix since it is spooky season, but I still don’t watch scary movies alone. I am almost done with Haunting of Hill House, and it’s really good! Of course, American Horror Story is incredible too… but the intro is always more frightening than the actual show haha. My favorite Halloween “movie” though, is The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion.

Madeline:
Growing up, it was one of Mom & I’s favorite Fall traditions to watch Hocus Pocus together. We’d carve our Jack O’Lanterns––fresh from the pumpkin patch––and afterward, we’d cozy up on the couch in pajamas for the event. I had a huge crush on Thackery Binx (and still do, if we’re being honest). More recently, though, I’ve been enjoying indie horror films like The Invitation, or the all-too-disturbing psychological thrillers like The Lodge and Mother.

A curious youngster moves to Salem, where he struggles to fit in before awakening a trio of diabolical witches that were executed in the 17th century.

Hazel:
Has anyone ever heard of The Halloween Tree? It’s an animated Hanna-Barbera made-for-television movie that aired on Cartoon Network every Halloween season in the 90’s. It tells the story of four friends who skip trick-or-treating in favor of chasing after their fifth friend’s spirit in an attempt to save them. The film explores the way different cultures celebrate their own version of Halloween and in retrospect, is really educational. Which would have completely turned me off as a kid, but it’s done in a really fun way.

Fun fact: I recently learned that this movie is based off Ray Bradbury’s 1972 novel by the same name, is narrated by Ray Bradbury, and also features Leonard Nimoy in the voice cast!

Four children learn the origins of Halloween customs while trying to save the life of their friend.

So there’s the list of our favorite movies to watch for Halloween! Have you seen any of the films we mentioned? What are some of your favorite films to watch during the month of October to get you in the Halloween spirit? Leave your movie recommendations in the comments! Happy Halloween!

Tacoholic Tank Top

Create Custom Tees & Tanks With Both Ink & Foil

At Customized Girl, you can design your own custom shirts, tanks, and so much more. Some we print with ink. Some we print with a special vinyl film or foil. No minimums required.

.

But did you know?

Certain items will allow you to add both ink and specialty foils!

This is true for any of our Promo Tees, Raglan Tees, and Promo Sweatshirts.

.

Blonde Brunette Foil Sweatsshirts

.

Here’s how it works:

Choose one of those items and visit our design center. In the Add Text and Add Art tabs, you will see a color menu.

Certain colors will have (+$3) or (+$6) next to the name. These are specialty foils!

Choose one of these options, and you will see a pretty sweet rendering. For example, choose Gold Metallic. Move your text around, and you will see it glimmer and change as you move.

via GIPHY

Here’s the trick: these specialty foils are only available on the first tab within Add Text or Add Art.

.

Why only the first tab?

Well, it’s not ideal if multiple pieces of foil are layered on top of each other. It can get thick, and it’s not a great feeling on your soft t-shirt. One layer? Super thin and comfy. Two or three layers? Starting to get uncomfy.

So we had to limit it to one type of text foil and one type of art foil. To do that, we limited it to the first text tab and first art tab.

.

Firecracker Onesie

.

Why is this limited to certain items?

You might have noticed that our Basic Tees, Raglan Tees, and Promo Sweatshirts all have something in common: light colored bodies.

It’s an easier process to get dark ink onto these light colors. Foils will overlap on top of this ink and it will work nicely.

However, if we are printing light ink onto a black t-shirt, we use more processes, including pretreatments and a base layer of white ink. Foils do not want to stick when overlapping this ink.

But again, the basic tees and some other items work great. Which means you can upload your own full color photo, get a beautiful print in ink, and then surround it with a fun foil, like metallic, glitter, opal, or neon!

Here is an example with an uploaded photo and our “gunmetal” vinyl for the text:

.

Nurse Squad Custom Tee

.

So much potential!

Think of it! Need a funny birthday tee for someone with a glittery personality? Upload a photo of their face, and add glitter text saying “Sarah Sparkles! Happy Birthday!”.

We’ll print the photo in ink, and we’ll decorate the text using our glitter-sparkle foil.

That’s why we love the onesie above that says “Mommy’s Little Firecracker”. Shouldn’t “firecracker” be written in a super-shiny Red Metallic Foil? We think so.

.

Vs Everyone

.

Use it for emphasis.

We’ve been selling these Your Text vs Everybody shirts for a while, but now you can take that design, put it on a promo tee, and really emphasize the most improtant part. Your part. The custom text.

In this example, we’ve changed the custom text to an Opal Rose foil for only three more dollars.

One important note:

Group discounts are not applied to specialty film & foil upcharges. If you are getting 5 or fewer shirts, yeah, go nuts with the glitter, the metallic, and whatnot. But if you are placing a larger order, we recommend skipping these specialty colors.

.

What specialty foils are available?

  • Gunmetal (in the Nurse Squad design above)
  • Pearlescent (Opal Rose, Pearl White, etc.)
  • Glow-in-the-Dark
  • Metallic (Gold, Silver, Copper, Blue, etc.)
  • Glitter (Gold, Black, Green, etc.)
  • Neon (Yellow, Raspberry, Orange, etc.)

We’re listening to our customers.

We were getting feedback recently about our Port and Company Large Square Duffel Bag. Several customers experienced tearing at the seams. When we first added the Port & Company bag, the quality was great. We’re not sure what happened with the manufacturing process, but it seems like the quality deteriorated recently. We listened to your feedback and removed it from the site. We’ve added the Augusta Flare Duffel Bag to replace it. All of the designs in our gallery that were on the old Port & Company bag are now on the new Augusta bag.
