Celebrity Deathmatch: Top 15 Hollywood Rivalries

Celebrities, with their all-consuming vanity, monstrous paychecks, and petty concerns, often don’t get along with each other. It’s only natural what with all the competition in Hollywood. There’s competition over jobs, money, and, of course, men. Here’s a list of the biggest celebrity feuds to blow up in the media.

  1. Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton: Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie grew up together in Beverly Hills and took their lifelong friendship onto TV when they both agreed to the hit reality show The Simple Life. But soon after the end of the third season in 2005, the two had a mysterious fight that became apparent when they stopped showing up at every social function arm in arm. While the source of the two-year feud has been somewhat mysterious, with neither party confirming how it started, the word on the rumor mill is that Richie thought it would be funny to screen Hilton’s infamous sex tape during an L.A. party held to honor Hilton. Richie denies that ever happened, and in 2006 the pair suddenly decided to make up and launched into an orchestrated reconciliation with a host of public appearances. Now, the friendship is going strong. The duo appeared on The Simple Life together again last year and are now dating twin brothers Joel and Benji Madden!
  2. Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag: Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag went from pseudo celebrities to front page news after their televised feud began on The Hills, the sort-of reality MTV show that spun off from Laguna Beach. When Montag began dating playboy Spencer Pratt, the arguments between the two best friends began. Montag resented Conrads constant criticism of her boyfriend, and Conrad resented the fact that Montag immediately seemed to ditch her for her new relationship. Eventually the resentment, and Pratt’s constant degrading of Conrad, split the friendship apart. Today, the women continue to fight publicly and consistently dis each other in the press. Each woman is a frequent Us Weekly cover girl, the headline often expressing a nasty sentiment. With all the bad karma generated between these two, it would seem reconciliation is a longshot.
  3. David Letterman and Jay Leno : Once good friends, Jay Leno began appearing on his buddy David Letterman’s late night talk show in the early 1980s when he was just a budding comedian. But when Leno nabbed Johnny Carson’s spot as host of The Tonight Show in 1992, when Carson retired, Letterman’s became incensed and his bitterness has lasted through today. After following Carson for many years, Letterman assumed he would move up into the coveted chair as host of the show. When it went to Leno, Letterman publicly expressed his frustration over having given Leno such a prominent platform on his own show. Letterman ended up leaving the network for CBS where he became host of The Late Show. He has consistently beat Leno in the ratings since, but despite a plea from Leno to kiss and makeup the two men remain estranged.
  4. Lindsay Lohan and Hillary Duff: Even though Lindsay Lohan has had many feuds with many fellow female celebrities, including Ashlee Simpson, Scarlet Johansson, and Paris Hilton, her most publicized tiff was with Hillary Duff, who dated Lohan’s ex-boyfriend — the washed-up heartthrob Aaron Carter. According to some rumors, Carter cheated on Lohan with Duff. According to others, he cheated on Duff with Lohan. The fight escalated at the 2003 premiere of Duff’s movie Cheaper By the Dozen when Lohan showed up, infuriating Duff and sparking her and her entourage to leave. Today, with Carter a distant memory for both women, the feud seems to have dissipated, and the two were even spotted hugging at a 2007 event.
  5. Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell: These two supermodels have held deep-seated resentments toward each other since the beginnings of their modeling careers. As two of the only black supermodels on the fashion scene, Banks publicly stated that Campbell consistently verbally attacked her at photo shoots and even had her thrown off a couple of sets because of an argument. Banks said that she had always felt threatened by Campbell, who has a notorious reputation as an aggressive diva. Banks even claimed that Campbell approached her backstage at one show and said, “You’ll never be me. Don’t think you’ll ever be me.” In 2005, however, the two women had a tearful and heartfelt makeup session on the set of Banks’ talk show and since then the whole thing seems to be water under the bridge.
  6. Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal : To Shaquille O’Neal, the L.A. Lakers team had one leader – him. But when young hot shot Kobe Bryant came on the team that all changed. His superstardom and king-sized ego created instant warfare between the two, with O’Neal started demanding that Bryant kowtow to his seniority and position of authority. When that didn’t happen, and when Lakers officials started rewarding Bryant’s athletic prowess with money and praise, it was a war of self-inflated egos that took off in the press. In one of his rap songs in 2004, O’Neal spit words against Bryant, and blamed him for his eventual trade to the Miami Heat. Word on the street is that these two tall guys are still not even close to being friends.
  7. Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears: These two have been in competition since starring on the Mickey Mouse Club together. But when their independent singing careers blew up, the friendly competition became full-blown disdain. While Spears was more of the commercial success, Aguilera’s freight-train voice brought in all the awards. In 2003, the two women tried to play nice during an MTV Video Music Awards performance with Madonna, where both Spears and Aguilera smooched Madge on the mouth. Spears’ open-mouthed approach won all the press attention, but Aguilera shot back saying that during rehearsals Spears seemed like a nervous and insecure lost little girl. While not publicly arguing, the two women still could not be described as friends.
  8. Heather Locklear and Denise Richards: Talk about cold, Locklear and Richards were best friends for many years, with Richards even being one of a few of Locklear’s best friends to be invited to her cozy Locklear’s 44th birthday celebration. The two women became very close after meeting on the set of Spin City in 2001. But when Locklear’s marriage to Richie Sambora crumbled in 2006, Richards, fresh out of her split from Charlie Sheen, went in for the kill. According to some rumors, Locklear suspected that Sambora and Richards had relations before their divorce, but regardless, it’s not cool to date your best friend’s ex-husband even after the divorce. Even though the romance between Richards and Sambora was short lived, chances are there’s no reconciliation in the stars for these two bombshells.
  9. Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur: Again a rivalry that began with friendship, rap stars Notorious BIG, a.k.a. Christopher Wallace or Biggie, and Tupac Shakur had bridged the divide between East Coast and West Coast rap and had even collaborated on songs. But as the rift between the East Coast and West Coast rap scenes deepened, so did the rift between these two men. In 1994, Tupac was shot five times outside of a New York studio. He survived the shooting, but blamed in on Biggie and his pals at Bad Boy Records, which included Sean “Puffy” Combs. Biggie denied the allegation, but alluded to it in a song on his new album. Tupac shot back with a song of his own, in which he said he had slept with Biggie’s wife, R&B star Faith Evans. The beef between the men’s two record companies was on. Tupac died a couple of years later in a drive by shooting in Las Vegas; Biggie was similarly killed in 1997 in California. Both murders remain unsolved.
  10. Rosie O’Donnell and Donald Trump: When billionaire Donald Trump announced that he would not fire his cocaine-using Miss USA winner Tara Conner, O’Donnell used her perch as a host of The View to publicly criticize the real-estate tycoon, calling him “a snake-oiled salesman.” Trump followed back calling O’Donnell a “fat loser.” And on and on it went. The feud made all of the top TV talk shows and then fizzled out. But while the heat of the moment has passed, these two TV stars still hold a deep-seated hatred for one
  11. Alyssa Milano and Shannen Doherty: Doherty and Milano started out as best friends on the set of their hit TV show Charmed, which also starred Holly Marie Combs. But after a couple of years of long-hard days together, the friends turned into bitter enemies, with the show’s producers even sending in an outside mediator to help squelch the bickering between the two. That didn’t work and the same diva spirit that got Doherty ejected from the cast of Beverly Hills 90210 eventually got her ejected from the cast of Charmed, making her one of the most frequently fired actresses in Hollywood. In the end, it was nothing more than on-set jealousies that stood between the two with Milano admitting, “We definitely didn’t get along. Shannen and I are two very different people.” Milano remained on the now-defunct show and the two remain estranged.
  12. Shanna Moakler and Paris Hilton: Pretty much everyone, it seems, hates Paris Hilton. The starlet has been implicated in dozens of feuds with fellow Hollywood celebutants, but the mix-up she had with Shanna Moakler was one of the more virulent scraps. Moakler and her hubby Travis Barker, the drummer for Blink 182, split in August 2006, at which point he began a heavily photographed affair with Hilton. Though Moakler acted initially unaffected by the romance, things came to a head in October 2006 when the ladies ran into each other at Hollywood hotspot Hyde Lounge and ended the night by filing police reports against each other. Moakler accused Hilton’s ex-boyfriend of knocking her down the stairs and pouring his drink on her; Hilton accused Moakler of hitting her in the jaw. Moakler has since reconciled with her hubby, but not with Hilton.
  13. Tom Cruise and Brooke Shields: The rift between these two longtime friends was short lived but pretty dramatic. After giving birth to her daughter, Shields went through a long bout of postpartum depression, which she treated by using the antidepressant Paxil for a short time. After her recovery, Shields went on Oprah to discuss her experience and encourage other women going through similar experiences. Shortly after, Cruise lashed out at Shields during an interview with Matt Lauer, during which he said that she shouldn’t have used antidepressants to combat her feelings, but that she should have turned to vitamins and Scientology for help. When Lauer questioned Cruises’ scientific basis, Cruise said that neither Lauer nor Shields understood psychiatry. Cruise has since apologized to Shields for criticizing her, and Shields even attended his wedding to Katie Holmes.
  14. George Michael and Elton John: This feud began when Elton John told members of the press that he thought Michael was a drug addict with “a deep-rooted unhappiness in his life.” John also called his pal’s new album Patience “disappointing” and said “My message to George would be that you need to get out more.” Michael, extremely hurt by the comments, refused to speak to John for over nine months, and wrote a letter to a British celebrity magazine saying John barely even knew him. The duo finally reconciled over dinner at John’s house catered by TV Chef Gordon Ramsey.
  15. Stella McCartney and Heather Mills: The daughter and former wife of Beatle’s star Paul McCartney have been well-known foes since Mills married Paul in 2002. While Stella and Mills respectfully kept their ill-willed comments about each other out of the press, it was widely rumored that McCartney felt Mills was a money-hungry gold digger. The two were rarely seen together during her father’s four-year marriage to Mills and when the two split and Mills publicly accused McCartney of hitting his first wife, Stella’s mother Linda McCartney, McCartney called Mills a “b*tch and a liar.” Mills responded by taking out a restraining order against Stella and forbidding her from seeing her half-sister. The divorce has been finalized, but the bad feelings between these two women remains.

What?!? You prefer to get your news from credible journalists out of a real newspaper? Well, suit yourself. Actually, some of the biggest most respected papers in the country have some pretty decent gossip columns, so go ahead and get your dirt with dignity.

  1. New York Post: The Post’s Page Six is one of the most notorious newspaper gossip columns in history.
  2. New York Times: Yep, even the nation’s journalistic stalwart gets in on the gossip from time to time.
  3. Boston Globe: The Globe’s entertainment section is well-updated and the paper even has a spot for breaking news on its home page.
  4. Boston Herald: Like the Post, this tabloid newspaper has its own gossip column called the Inside Track, as well as a pretty substantial entertainment section.
  5. L.A. Times: Without a good gossip section, the L.A. Times would be put to shame. After all, Hollywood is its home turf.
  6. New York Daily News: The NYDN is another saucy tabloid gossip column that gives Page Six a run for its money.
  7. Washington Post: The Post doesn’t play up celebrities in its front pages, but politicians and their relationships with Hollywood keep this paper competitive.
  8. San Francisco Chronicle: SF Gate’s Daily Dish column is pretty juicy.
  9. Chicago Tribune: This big city paper has an equally big entertainment section.

Top 20 Most Expensive Celebrity Divorces

Divorces among laymen are often characterized by a lot of bickering, a midnight move into an efficiency apartment, and drawn-out battles over automatic kitchen appliances. Celebrity divorces, however, are a little more complicated. While these couples bicker too, the arguments tend to go beyond who is getting the family cat. When celebrities split up, fortunes the size of a small college endowment are typically at stake, thereby taking the mudslinging and dirty tactics to a whole new level. Here’s a list of 20 of the most expensive celebrity breakups in recent history.

  1. Paul McCartney and Heather Mills: The contentious divorce between this ex-Beatle and former model is sure to go down in history as one of the ugliest, priciest splits ever with both parties using the media as an instrument to trade insults and heighten their positions. The couple met at a fundraiser and married in 2002. A year later Mills gave birth to their daughter Beatrice and three years after that it was announced that the British duo was splitting. While negotiations of the settlement are still in the works, it’s rumored that a final agreement will be announced soon. It’s also rumored that Mills could walk away with up to $120 million in U.S. dollars, an impressive win for Mills, who has been representing herself in the divorce case.
  2. Michael and Juanita Jordan: The former Chicago Bulls star has several athletic records under his belt, and now he’s set another – this time for the most expensive divorce settlement on record. His split from wife Juanita after 17 years of marriage cost him $168 million. Aside from the money, Juanita also received the couple’s Chicago home and custody of all three of their children. An impressive exchange of dough for a couple who started out with humble beginnings, having met at Bennigan’s and eloped in Las Vegas.
  3. Neil Diamond and Marcia Murphey: Diamond and Murphey’s 1995 divorce was on record as the most expensive celebrity breakup until the news about the Jordan’s. But after 26 years of marriage, the couple, who have two children together, split to the tune of $150 million. Questioned about the sum after the proceedings were final, Diamond famously quipped, “She’s worth every penny.” Diamond credited Murphey with helping him “keep his sanity” during the most tumultuous and busy times of his career. After his divorce, Diamond began dating an Australian woman 30 years his junior.
  4. Steven Spielberg and Amy Irving: Spielberg has made his fortune producing and directing blockbuster hits, like E.T. and Indiana Jones. But he lost half of his assets during his divorce from Amy Irving in 1989 after only four years of marriage. At the time, the settlement was big news, and the $100 million Irving received still ranks in many top 10 lists of the most expensive divorce pay outs. Surely, Spielberg has gotten over it by now. Currently, he’s worth over $3 billion.
  5. Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison: Married for over 20 years, Mathison and Ford met in 1977 before he was landing multi-million dollar roles, therefore no pre-nuptial agreement was deemed necessary at the time. But by the time they split up, Ford was earning over $20 million per picture. As part of the deal, Mathison won future earnings from unreleased movies Ford made while they were still married, and she walked away with a sum total of $85 million, leaving Ford free to pursue his current flame, Calista Flockhart.
  6. Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva: These two college sweethearts divorced in 1994 after a 16-year marriage that produced three children. They married right after their graduation from California State University in Fullerton, and Costner struggled to make a name for his self in Hollywood during the early years of their marriage before striking it big with Oscar-winning hits like Dances With Wolves.
  7. James Cameron and Linda Hamilton: The powerhouse director and buff actress met while filming The Terminator, which Cameron directed and Hamilton starred. Their marriage in 1997 lasted a measly 18 months, a paltry timeline that wouldn’t be reflected in the monstrous divorce settlement. Accused of having an affair and being something of a tyrant, Hamilton called Cameron a “miserable man” and landed an official settlement of $50 million. Part of this luck came from the fact that Cameron received his $100 million paycheck for Titanic during their marriage, of which Hamilton got a major share.
  8. Michael and Diandra Douglas: Michael and Diandra Douglas married in 1977 after nine weeks of courtship and had one son, Cameron. When they split in the mid 1990s, Diandra accused him of perpetual cheating and being an absentee father. The couple was known to split up and get back together, but the years of womanizing and alcoholism had caught wearied the couple and by the time of their split, making a reconciliation impossible. In what was then a landmark settlement, Diandra received $45 million and two properties in Majorca and Beverly Hills. Since the divorce, Douglas has remarried Catherine Zeta-Jones, who is 25 years younger than him. They have two children together.
  9. Lionel and Diane Ritchie: The dissolution of the eight year marriage between Lionel and Diane Ritchie became fodder for gossip magazines worldwide when Diane petitioned for a settlement of $300,000 a month, outlining in depositions the lifestyle allowance she had during the couple’s marriage. Diane claimed she was entitled to the amount so she could keep up the “extravagant lifestyle” she had become accustomed to during the marriage. Detailed in the documents was Diane’s request for $50,000-per-month for manicures, massages and other beauty services, $15,000-per-month for clothing, $5,000-per-month for jewelry, and $20,000-per-year for plastic surgery, among other outrageous allotments. While Diane wasn’t successful in securing her asking price, she did walk away with a cool $20 million, making this a celebrity divorce for the history books.
  10. Donald and Ivana Trump: During her divorce from Donald Trump in 1992, Ivana Trump coined a catty phrase that would become a mantra for rich divorcees everywhere – “Don’t get mad, get everything.” After learning that Donald was having an affair with Marla Maples, a Georgia-born beauty queen, in 1990, Ivana decided to go for the jugular and walked away from their 20-plus-year relationship with $20 to $25 million, plus some property rights. Since then, both the Trumps have moved on to other marriages and other divorces. Donald married Maples and they divorced in 1999. He is currently married to Melania Trump, a 37-year-old Slovenian model. Ivana married business man Riccardo Mazzucchelli. They divorced two years later.
  11. Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall: Jerry Hall, a model from Texas, met Jagger, the lead singer of the Rolling Stones in the 1970s, when both she and he were in relationships with other people. Dating through the 1980s, the couple wed in a Balinese ceremony in 1990 and had four children together. In the late 1990s, Hall discovered that Jagger had impregnated another woman and his consistent infidelity came to a head. While Jagger won a petition to annul the marriage, claiming that the Hindu ceremony wasn’t legal, Hall still walked away with $10 million. Small change when looking at Jagger’s $300 million net worth, but Hall has been able to capitalize on the marriage in other ways – recently she signed a $2 million book deal to write about her longtime relationship with Jagger and expose the details of their divorce.
  12. Clint Eastwood and Maggie Johnson: The Western star-turned-Oscar-winning-director married Maggie Johnson in the 1950s when they were still young and way before he was famous. The couple met on a blind date and wed six months after their first blind date. They had two children together. When they split in 1978, Maggie reportedly received $25 million. Clint has since had other serious relationships and is currently married to Diana Ruiz.
  13. Ted Danson and Casey Coates: Cheers star Ted Danson married fashion designer Casey Coates in 1976. They had two children together, and after the birth of their first child Casey had a bad stroke. Danson took a break to take care of her, but eventually ended up leaving Coates to pursue a relationship with Whoopi Goldberg. Coates got a $30 million settlement after the 15-year marriage.
  14. Bruce Springsteen and Julianne Phillips: Springsteen, a legendary 1980s rock star, married Phillips, a model and actress in 1985. Their relationship was tumultuous and short-lived and they filed for divorce in 1988. The breakup was attributed to Springsteen’s unhappiness and subsequent affair with his backup singer, Patti Scialfa. Phillips received a $20 million payout for her trouble.
  15. Johnny and Joanna Carson: Johnny Carson, the king of late night, married four times in his life, but his most financially successful spouse was model/socialite Joanna Holland, who extracted $20 million out of their ugly and long divorce. They married secretly and divorced after 10 years of marriage, outlasting most speculators. At the time of their split, Carson was the highest paid TV personality, pulling in $15 million a year. The divorce stretched out over three years and was highly publicized. Though he fought tooth and nail, Holland wound up winning cash, three properties in New York and one in Beverly Hills.
  16. Sylvester Stallone and Sasha Czack: Stallone, most famous for his role as boxer Rocky Balboa, and Czack, a photographer, married in 1974 and divorced 11 years later after 2 children. Their second child was diagnosed with autism and the illness was said to have put a strain on the marriage. Czack walked away with $12 million. Apparently this silver screen boxer really did take a few too many shots to the head. We’ll have more from Sylvester later on down in this list.
  17. Kenny and Marianne Gordon Rogers: Country star Rogers has been married five times, but no marriage was more expensive than his fourth to actress Marianne Gordon. The couple was together for 16 years, and upon their split Marianne got a $60 million settlement. Never bitter, Rogers told the press that she “deserved it” for putting up with him. This man usually known for his soft tunes and his soft heart might have another side that his publicist has done a good job at hiding.
  18. Sylvester Stallone and Brigitte Nielsen: Sly Stallone makes this list twice after his 1985 marriage to actress Brigette Nielsen ended just two years later with a $6 million settlement. The two met on a movie set, starring in both Rocky IV and Cobra together. Nielsen is perhaps best known now for her reality TV career, having starred in VH1’s The Surreal Life, during which she began her notorious fling with rapper Flavor Flav.
  19. Jim Carrey and Melissa Womer: Funnyman Jim Carrey met his first wife Melissa Womer before he was famous. She was working as a waitress at The Comedy Store, a comedy club in West Hollywood when they met. They were married for eight years and had a daughter Jane. Their messy divorce left Carrey’s wallet $3.5 million lighter. Jim has since been involved in many relationships and some have even been rumored to be on the brink of engagement. Unfortunately for your him he wasn’t just the Grinch that stole Christmas as this man of many masks has yet to tie the knot. Keep trying Jim we’re pulling for you!
  20. Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson: This stylish couple was married from 1988 to 1993 and together they adopted one son. Their child became the forefront of their much-publicized divorce drama as they battled in court over custody rights. Eventually, the matter was settled and Loni walked away with $2 million. Sorry Burt, while you have many great roles and have kept us on our toes for a long time, this lady was not for you.

Can’t Touch This: Fashion Fads from the 1980’s You Don’t Want to Remember!

The 1980s were ripe for the picking when it comes to bad fads. From boom boxes to Pee Wee Herman to Valley Girl speak, you’ll find reprehensible pop-culture trends in every nook and cranny of this decade. But it’s undeniable that most of the really outrageous fads of the 1980s came from fashion and clothing designers. Here’s the top ten worst 1980s fashion looks on record.

  1. Shoulder Pads: Unfortunately, in the 1980s it was considered attractive for women to look like football players. No matter the age, females sported jackets, sweaters, and even T-shirts (yes, T-shirts) with sewn-in shoulder pads broadening their frames. Was a designer so short-sighted as to not include shoulder pads in their blouses – no problem! A whole sub-industry sprouted up for shoulder pads that could be easily Velcroed inside unfashionable wears. Some theorists point to the fact that the 80s were a decade when women were beginning to really assert themselves in the workplace as an excuse for this God-awful trend.
  2. Fingerless Gloves: One of the more mysterious trends of the 1980s, fingerless gloves were all the rage even among music legends like Billy Idol and Madonna. While Idol preferred his made of leather, Madonna liked to rock the all-lace varietals. The style caught on with the punk crowd and has even been revitalized, albeit in wool knit versions, by the hipsters of late.
  3. Acid Washed Jeans: You were nobody in the 1980s if you didn’t own a pair of acid washed jeans. And hopefully you didn’t embarrass yourself by wearing them without tight rolling the bottom of the legs, unless, of course, you chose a taper-cut pair. Acid washing extended to every denim product made in the 1980s – jackets, skirts, vests, etc. Pair them all together, and you were sure to be the coolest kid in school. The look is created by washing denim in a chemical that took all the dye out of the top layer of the fabric, but left the lower layers dark, creating a splotchy, spotted effect.
  4. Jelly Sandals: A wardrobe staple of the 1980s, jelly sandals were popular among every man, woman, and child, and the brighter the color, the better. Many contemporary fashion designers have resurrected these horrid things, albeit in a slicker format. You have to hand it to one thoughtful blogger, who recently made the astute assessment that Crocs are like the jellies of our time – unexplainable plastic footwear that may feel comfortable, but are uglier than a pair of nurse’s sneakers.
  5. Parachute Pants: The earliest version of these nylon pants were more form-fitting and accented by zippers and various pull-ties. But over time, they morphed into the style MC Hammer made popular, which were eventually termed “Hammer Pants.” People rocking this style looked as if they had fitted an actual parachute to their person, fastening it like you might an oversized diaper. Both styles were mostly popular among breakdancers, hip-hop performers, and Michael Jackson enthusiasts, and they had a good run among the masses. While nylon is still a popular fabric for some garments, thankfully both versions of the parachute pants we know from the 80s have remained dead and gone.
  6. Crimped and Permed Hair: In the 80s, straight hair was for the birds. It was all about crimping and perming. Hair was big and bold, even for some guys. Just think back to those old Poison or Whitesnake music videos. The how-to for hairstyling was pretty simple: tease it to the ceiling and then lacquer it down with as much hairspray as could be mustered without suffocation. And if you had to pull it off your face, a side ponytail was pretty much your only option, lest you wanted to risk social rejection.
  7. Leotards: Like many other 80s fashion items, leotards have made something of a comeback in recent times, but it’s anyone’s guess as to why. While traditionally invented as a garment for exercise, back in the 80s work out gear of all kinds were acceptable worn as regular run-of-the-mill Monday outfits, meaning the leotard was free to double as a shirt paired with jeans (stonewashed, of course), a skirt, or on its own with some requisite legwarmers – why not?! Most recently, the world’s very own queen of the 80s, Madonna, rocked a purple Dolce and Gabbana leotard for her 2006 Grammy’s performance.
  8. Oversized Hair Bows: Again, the world has Madonna to thank for this trend made popular in her video for “Lucky Star”. But regardless of who started it, big, floppy, oversized hair bows were all the rage in the 80s. They usually came attached to a headband or barrette for easy insertion into those big, 80s dos!
  9. Colorful Makeup: Who wore blue and yellow eye shadow, hot pink blusher, purple mascara, and bright red lipstick all at the same time? The ladies of the 80s, of course! While this wild striping of colors has made something of a comeback on fashion runways in recent years, it’s highly unlikely you’ll spot a contemporary person who dares to rock colored mascara. The makeup trend of the 1980s could be likened to war paint – it just shouldn’t be done by anyone, unless the person is culturally obligated to by some ancient tribal law.
  10. Plastic Sunglasses: Sunglasses were not meant to be neutral in the 80s. Take these brightly colored plastic glasses that resemble Venetian blinds, for example. Also, who can forget the Robot glasses made popular by the movie “16 Candles,” which are simply a thin strip of plastic that wraps around the front of the face like a headband.

So the 80’s may or may not have had some questionable fashion statements. But hey, we still love the 80’s and you should too! Show some love to the decade responsible for some of the most unfortunate hair decisions to date!

It seems that year by year, society inches closer to becoming the techno-utopia characterized decades ago in the “Jetsons” cartoon series. No one could have known in the 1960s that Hanna-Barbera would so adeptly predict the future, but as long as inventors continue to roll out more and more advanced contraptions designed to make our lives easier and better, it could be no time at all when we’ll all be subject to George Jetson’s grueling work schedule of 3-hours-a-day, 3-days-a-week. Best Spring Break for your Buck!

In college, nothing is more anxiously anticipated than Spring Break week. But while some students pack up for a luxurious Mexican Riviera getaway on their parents’ dime, others must scrimp and save every dollar earned at the coffee shop. The good news for those of you in the latter group is that it is very possible to have a fun vacation without going broke.

If you have to fund your own travel, however, there are several things to keep in mind. First, you’ll need to plan ahead. Booking plane tickets and hotel accommodations in advance is essential to saving money. As Spring Break approaches and rooms and seats fill up, hotels and airlines will increase their rates. So unfortunately those of you on a budget will have to relinquish some of your spontaneity. When making travel arrangements, make sure you do your research. Use online search tools like Kayak, Priceline, and Travelocity and compare your results. Another thing to check is individual airline sites. Often times airlines will run travel deals that aren’t available through the above mentioned search engines and make sure to check airlines that frequently have specials, like Southwest and Jet Blue.

Location is another consideration. If you are on a strict budget, then you’re probably not going to Maui. Depending on where your college is located, some locales will be cheaper to get to than others. But one good way to save money is to look into travel deals. There are several travel agencies that specialize in group rates for spring breakers. Look to them for guidance on all-inclusive packages. While there is less freedom of choice with an all-inclusive package, they do eliminate a lot of worry and unexpected costs that come with things you might not necessarily be thinking about, like cab rides or airport shuttles. These packages often take care of everything you need – airfare, hotel room, food, and transportation – so they’re ideal for curbing costs. But definitely do your research and find a company that is well recommended. Some of these services are less reputable than others and you don’t want to take a risk and end up in a shady situation. Spring Break scams are common and have ruined the vacations of many a sorority sister.

So now that some of the basic issues are out of the way, where to go? One way to keep your costs down when picking a location is to explore something in your own region. For example, if you go to school in Florida, pick a beach, find a cheap motel room, and eliminate travel costs.

If you live or go to school in the southeast, access to beaches is no problem, and if you’re steering yourself away from popular spots because you’re worried about costs, that may actually backfire. Where there are crowds, there tend to be deals.

For example,Panama City Beach, Florida is an extremely popular Spring Break destination, second only to Daytona in the state. But that actually works in your favor if you’re trying to save money. The massive influx of party-ready coeds has given rise to a price war between the city’s hotels. Some offer packages with ridiculously low rates, like $169 for the entire week, a package that includes a daily breakfast and a free beer party. If you live within driving range of the area, then you can definitely take advantage of the competitive spirit among the city’s businesses and find some great deals.
. Clearwater is beautiful and offers ecologically and socially diverse beaches. While a popular spot for Spring Break, Clearwater is much less crowded. You can find packed beaches, but you can also find quiet nature reserves. There is an airport nearby, so getting to and from your hotel will not likely require a rental car. Depending on how many people you’re traveling with, cheap lodging is fairly abundant. Many of the less-fancy motels offer rates starting at $60 per night. You could also look into renting an efficiency for the week, with rates starting around $650. These units sleep at least five and have full kitchens, meaning you’ll spend less on food.

Generally speaking, if travel costs are not prohibitive, popular Spring Break locations like Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and South Padre Island, Texas can often be your cheapest options due to the super aggressive and abundant travel packages out there. Granted, if you go to school in Washington State then getting to these locations may be somewhat difficult. But who said Spring Break had to occur at the beach?

In the Pacific Northwest, head north to Canada and check out Vancouver, a huge city with a gorgeous mountainous backdrop. The nightlife is active, the scenery is beautiful, and the drinking age is 18. Elect to stay in a hostel and you’ll pay less than $30 per night. Or stay stateside and go on a camping and hiking trip at Mount Ranier. It might be a little cold for a tent, but you can find lodging from $40 per night in the region. Or if skiing or snowboarding is more your thing, head to Silver Mountain Resort in Idaho for the $36 student lift tickets.

If you live in the Northeast, the same activities apply. Head across the border to Montreal, take advantage of the cosmopolitan culture and shack up in a hostel for $18 per night. Or take a ski trip to Cannon Ski Resort in New Hampshire where you’ll find lift tickets for college students at $42 per day. The mountain also has great package deals and season passes that could save you some more.
404
In the southwest, you’ll have plenty of outdoor options due to the fact that the March weather will be perfect for hiking and camping. Spring Breakers flock to Lake Havasu in Arizona every year and there are plenty of deals to find. Renting a houseboat 404 is expensive, but could be cheap depending on how many people you can cram on board. But lodging can be found in Havasu City for around $50 a night. Lake Powell on the Arizona-Utah border offers similar breathtaking scenery and has lots of options for camping. Or consider a road trip through New Mexico, a state resplendent with cheap hotels, plentiful campsites, and cool cities like Santa Fe and breathtaking parks like the White Sands National Monument.

If partying isn’t what you’re after, then you might consider an Alternative Spring Break. This organization offers students the chance to do some meaningful community work in needy communities across the country. To participate, students raise money for the trip with fundraisers, so the personal costs of going are very minimal. A road trip can also be a fun alternative to the standard Spring Break. You’ll get to see a more diverse landscape and the freedom of the open road is just as exhilarating (if not more so) as a throng of well-muscled men at the beach. Check out this New York Times article on how to travel by car with your frugality in tact.

Regardless of where your starting point is located, the fact is you don’t have to feel constrained by a small bank account. The key to keeping your trip under budget is simply planning in advance. Don’t rule out that crazy week in Cancun, but do start thinking early about which foam parties you’ll attend and use every resource available to help you find the best prices. The tourism industry wants you to travel, and they know that they’ll make more money by lowering prices to increase their customer base. A little research and a little forward-thinking and you’ll be frolicking in the surf in no time.

Want to make your trip even more memorable? Customizing one of a kind spring break tees and tanks is the perfect way to forever remember your vacation. Design yours today!

Go Go Green Couture: Eco-friendly Fashions for Your Closet

The organic revolution and the growing global concern about the future health of our planet has forced many industries to change their business models. Most grocery stores, save the ones in remote locations, now have organic sections devoted to solely to products made without pesticides or hormones. Natural food grocery stores are popping up in number in every large- and mid-sized city across the country, and some organic scholars predict that most Americans will be eating only organic foods by 2023. Builders and architects are receiving incentives for constructing energy-efficient buildings and manufacturing companies like auto and petroleum makers, the biggest pollution culprits on the planet, are now mandated to cut their carbon emissions. So, it seems only logical that fashion and clothing makers would also make ecological strides. Organic clothing items are commonly found now on the Internet and on the racks in small boutiques and even large chains, like Whole Foods and, the Gap. And, to the delight of many fashion-forward consumers, these products are not all shapeless, beige sacks.

Some may wonder why purchasing organic clothing is important. Since a person doesn’t typically ingest their corduroys, the personal benefit of natural fiber T-shirts may not be readily apparent, and the societal benefit is often overlooked. Cotton is a crop. And non-organic cotton growers spray their yield with chemicals and pesticides the same as any other non-organic farmer. In fact, cotton is the most pesticide-intense crop in the world, using over 50 million pounds of pesticide per year in the U.S. alone. This chemical use is aiding in the rapid destruction of the environment and the deterioration of human health, as many scientific studies are finding.

Thankfully, your efforts to become more environmentally conscious with what you wear will be a little easier thanks to the many activists and fashion designers leading the way. Take for example, Shellie and Michael Lackman, who launched the Organic Clothing Blog in 2006. While this blog won’t give you too many external references to organic clothing makers (the authors have their own business), it will give you supremely in-depth coverage of all the issues surrounding the organic clothing industry. One fascinating article centers on Ayurvastra clothing, which is clothing with microcapsules embedded into the fabric that release scents and lotions that have healing benefits.

The Lackman’s also have their own organic clothing line called Lotus Organics, based in Fairfield, Iowa. While some of the items for sale are fairly standard, the sleek lines of the A-Line skirt and Swan Dress will please even the most high-maintenance fashionistas.

Jonano, a higher-end retail outlet, specializes in bamboo and hemp clothing, and sells fashionable items like the Rio Dress and the Lena Capri pant.

For social events, turn to Earth Speaks, a line that offers several cute dresses and blouses. For the hipper among us, check out Loomstate, a company that carries the matter-of-fact motto “Giving a shit is sexy,” for trendy bodily organics and jeans. (Loomstate doesn’t sell its wares online, but the website does have a store finder.)

Some of the most notable organic designers are the self-dubbed “organic pioneers” Stewart and Brown, two designers who left their posts at Patagonia to start a natural clothing line that is truly top-of-the-line in its attention to detail and fitting. Cycle through their collection to view their amazing dresses and sophisticated button-down shirts.

If you’re a jean freak, you’ll want to know about Del Forte Denim, an all-natural, fashionable jean line sold in boutiques. The company even started Project Rejeaneration, which encourages customers to send back used pairs of jeans to the company so they can incorporate the materials into their new products. If flowy skirts and ruffled accents are your thing, look to EcoGanik for beautiful designs and simple staples like the < a href=http://secure-shop.mykorazon.com/new/osc_backup/product_info.php?products_id=654> V-neck Pocket Dress.

Sweetgrass constructs their products from hemp and offers a line of mostly basics. But the styles are well fitted and chic. For an edgier look, try Mountains of the Moon, a higher-end design company with a sexier style. And without a doubt, the U.K.-based company Enamore is hemp made runway worthy. Known especially for their lingerie line, items like the Vintage Print Tulip Dress mark Enamore’s edgy style. For more basics, try Rawganique ,another all-hemp line that makes both women’s and men’s clothes.

One designer back from the 1980s with a new approach to fashion is Katharine Hamnett (you may recognize her “Choose Life” T-shirt from Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” video). Hamnett is re-launching her revolutionary T-shirts, but this time it’s all natural. She now uses her online store to educate people about the dangers of living carelessly.

If you’re more of a mall shopper, you might want to tryThe Green Loop an Amazon-style website that allows you to peruse through several organic offerings from a diverse group of designers, like Habitude, Passenger Pigeon, and Emily Katz.

Wherever your shopping takes you, the most uplifting thing about the organic trend in the clothing industry is that it’s trickling down to the major chain retailers. Target is now selling organic clothing items and bedding; H&M recently released an organic collection and plans to continue doing so.

There’s a lot of good news coming from the ever-more-ecologically-progressive fashion industry. Keep up with all the trends and latest news with the following resources: The Sustainable Cotton Center, The Lazy Environmentalist, and The Organic Trade Organization.

10 Celebrity Weddings to Watch Out for in 2008

During the past few years, Hollywood celebrities all seem to be on the same page. Either they’re getting married and then getting pregnant, or getting pregnant and then getting married. As steadfast as Juicy Couture track suits, getting hitched is one trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. Here’s a round-up of some celebrity weddings to watch for in 2008, and some couples that are on the path to betrothal. Let’s face it – it wouldn’t be gossip without speculation.

  1. Fergie and Josh Duhamel: Despite their reportedly awkward first encounter (Duhamel approached Fergie on a set, saying, “Wow, you’re hot”), Ms. Fergilicious and Mr. Tad Hamilton got engaged in December 2007. After dating for three years and buying a home together, Duhamel popped the question with a multi-karat, round-cut ring. Though they took different roads into show business, with Fergie starting out young on Kids, Inc. and Duhamel not getting a break until his late 20s, the two have been inseparable since they began dating and are a favorite among the paparazzi.
  2. Jessica Alba and Cash Warren:These two met on the set of the “Fantastic Four,” which was released in 2005. Alba was the star, Warren the director’s assistant. According to several magazine interviews, the couple fell for each other right away. Just a few months after they began dating, Alba was quoted in the media as saying that Warren might be “the one.” In the summer of 2007, however, the seemingly-happy couple broke up. After a quiet reconciliation, the couple went on to announce in December that Alba is expecting Warren’s child. Just a few weeks later, they announced their engagement.
  3. Nicole Richie and Joel Madden:While there’s been no formal announcement, this couple has been rumored by several websites to be planning an engagement for later this year. This month, the couple welcomed their first daughter Harlow Winter Kate Madden, and both have publicly acknowledged their commitment to each other and their hopes to marry. Though neither Richie or Madden have historically been the picture of perfection – Richie was arrested and served an hour of jail time in 2007 for driving under the influence; Madden had a party-boy reputation earlier in his career – they seem to have pulled their act together quickly following the discovery that they were going to have a child. Just before Christmas, they donated all the gifts from their baby shower to homeless children and started a charity foundation to benefit low-income families.
  4. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard:This longtime couple welcomed their first baby Ramona in October 2006. In April of that year, they announced Gyllenhaal’s pregnancy at the same time they announced their engagement There is no wedding date, as of yet, but it wouldn’t be shocking if this under-the-radar Brooklyn-based couple decided 2008 was the year.
  5. Selma Hayek and Francois-Henri Pinault: The sexy Mexican actress recently gave birth to her first child, a girl, with Pinault, a French billionaire. The couple has been engaged since March of 2007, and recently “In Touch Magazine” named the duo Hollywood’s richest couple. Pinault made his fortune in luxury goods and is said to be worth more than $14 billion.
  6. Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller: Let’s hope Charlie Sheen has better luck this time around. In 2005, the quintessential Hollywood bad boy split from his ex-wife Denise Richards, with whom he has two daughters. It was a divorce replete with slander, abuse, and restraining orders. But it seems one woman doesn’t believe the hype. In 2007, Sheen announced his engagement to Brooke Mueller, a 29-year-old real estate investor. The couple is very happy together by all reports, so here’s hoping that the man who kept Heidi Fleiss in business has cleaned up his act.
  7. Ali Larter and Hayes McArthur: The “Heroes” bombshell got engaged last fall to her boyfriend, actor Hayes McArthur. Without the runaway success of “Heroes”, Larter, a New Jersey native, might best be remembered for the scene in Varsity Blues where her character dons a whipped-cream bikini in an attempt to seduce the school’s star football player. MacArthur most recently had a role in “The Game Plan.”
  8. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ross McCall: After two years of courtship, this former “Party of Five” actress plans to marry Ross McCall, a Scottish actor, who was in “Band of Brothers.” Hewitt most recently was in the news for an unflattering bikini photo that surfaced all over the Internet and on the cover of “People Magazine.” Love Hewitt took a lot of flak for her less-than-perfect physique, but fought back by saying that Hollywood standards on weight were too extreme. According to her website, Love Hewitt is a size 2!
  9. Rose McGowan and Robert Rodriguez: From Marilyn Manson-goth to Texas bred-director, Rose McGowan has demonstrated that she is wide open when it comes to her taste in men. This ex-“Charmed” star and the “Sin City” director apparently fell head over heels for each other on the set of “Grindhouse,” which he directed. The duo were not very good at hiding their affair, and it eventually led Rodriguez to split from his wife of 16 years, Elizabeth Avellan, with whom he has five children and a production company. In October 2007, McGowan and Rodriguez announced their engagement 404.
  10. Matthew McConaughey and Camilla Alves: OK, so this couple is not even engaged. But in January 2008, McConaughey announced that he and his Brazilian model girlfriend were going to have a baby together. The announcement, which he posted on his personal website, was written in classic McConaughey-speak. “”My girlfriend Camila and I made a baby together. It’s 3 months growin’ in her womb and all looks healthy and lively so far. We are stoked and wowed by this miracle of creation …” Someone get that baby a surf board, stat.

Top 100 Fashion Blogs

Ten years ago there might have been two handfuls of fashion sites on the Internet. Today, thousands of blogs focus on fashion – or at least on some portion of the fashion industry. Blogs have opened the door for anyone – no matter where they live – to publicize their personal style. Even the NY Times is getting in on the act, as ‘T‘ will launch “The Moment,” a blog that will be updated throughout the day by T editors, guest bloggers, and global correspondents later this year.

Since Web fashion picks are so numerous, we’ve culled 100 top blogs out of the hundreds of available fashion sites. The topics listed below cover everything from accessories to vintage, with a top ten list that was plucked from those topics. Each site is a blog, except for the online magazine category (although most of those magazines also carry blogs). These blogs were chosen for frequent and recently updated blog entries, a focus on fashion, and for their attitudes and/or perspectives – no matter if they’re amateurs or professionals. Please note that the blog numbering is not meant to be a ranking, as each fashion topic is listed in alphabetical order with the listed blogs also listed in alphabetical order within that topic.

Top Ten

The following ten sites were plucked from this list’s topics as the ‘best of the best’ from each one of the topics in this list. You’ll find the topics listed below these top ten blogs.

  1. Beauty Addict: Kristen Kelly had so much makeup during her teen years that she used a trunk to haul it around. She founded Beauty Addict in September 2005 as a way to share her product obsessions with the world. Beauty Addict is now one of the largest independent beauty blogs on the web and has been featured in The New York Times, Allure, and other publications.
  2. DC Goodwill Fashion Blog: Are you kidding? This blog is the best! Not only does Goodwill provide job training and employment services to people with disadvantages and disabilities, they now provide readers with the hottest retro fashion ideas at bargain-basement prices – and the styles aren’t necessarily from Goodwill. Think Hot Topic, Forever 21, etc., as well as frequent hints to visit the DC Goodwill eBay Store.
  3. Fashion Wire Daily: Hardcore, down to business, hot news about the fashion industry. You can take this site to the bank. On average, FWD posts 10 stories and 50 photos each day in categories like fashion, beauty, and runway.

  8. The Art of the Steal: Amanda Failing has a fine arts background (hence the “art”), so she uses her sense of composition, color, rhythm and balance to replicate the hottest outfits at a discount or to find new trends that would fit in a working woman’s budget. She’s darn good at the pricing part – hence the “steal.”
  9. The Pretty Pear: Colleen discusses all aspects of a happy, stylish plus-size lifestyle. She believes that women of size are beautiful and deserve beautiful clothing, shoes, and accessories just as much as “average” sized women.
  10. Vintage Fashion Guild: The ultimate vintage clothing site for anyone who’s searching for clothes shown and sold online. Several times per week you’ll see new posts about featured members or strange and beautiful couture brought to the guild’s attention by a guild member.

  5. The Jewelry Blog: Cluny Grey is a former instructor of college English and Humanities through the Arts who has turned into a jewelry designer. Most of the jewelry she makes can be seen at Cluny Grey Jewelry or at Studio G Jewelry. Her blog is about jewelry designing and creating.

Celeb and Model Fashion

While some of you may yawn over celeb and runway flair, others fawn over sites like Kiss Me, Stace or Young, Black, and Fabulous. Here are some of the best celeb/model fashion sites on the Web, based upon photo clarity, a hot attitude, and a fashion focus (gossip ranks low on the totem pole).

  1. Blogging Project Runway: Yes, there are dozens of Project Runway blogs on the Internet, but Laura K does a fantastic job on keeping up with the looks, timeline, and gossip on this fashion show. You can find all three seasons here.
  2. Catwalk Queen 404: This link leads to ‘Celebrity Fashion,’ but you can find trends, fashion news, and tips on how to get the ‘celeb’ look at this site as well.
  3. Fashion Addict Diary: F.A.D. provides photos, gossip, and images of the hottest or most talked-about stars, celebs, and personalities.
  4. Go Fug Yourself: Whether you pray for this type of publicity or not is up to you, as this site entertains about four million viewers per day. This popular site is filled with celeb fashion (or celeb strangeness), and edited with a keen sense of the absurd.

  6. coolchiq: Why be comfortable when you can be stylish? One of the best sites to find the edgiest looks around.
  7. Jezebel: Celebrity fashion “without airbrushing.”
  8. PopSugar: This link will take you to the Celebrity section of this online venue, where you can also find categories such as beauty and fashion. The photos are clear, large, and, therefore, easy to decipher the intricate details of the clothing.
  9. The Glossy : If the runway is more up your alley, The Glossy has that for you. Very little commentary, lots of images, and a great link list to couture sites.
  10. V-Style: A personal stylist, Vanessa brings on the celebs and models as well as advice on how to wear the latest trends.
  11. WatchTrend: Celeb news with photos and with a focus on fashion and style.

Vintage and Thrift

No, “Vintage” and “Thrift” aren’t the same, but both topics are hot at the moment. So we compiled this list of sites that are both vintage and that can be thrifty, or visa-versa. Many of the bloggers sell what they find through online store or on eBay, so you can share in their bounty!
